How to Style Knitwear
Knitwear can mean a lot of things: shirts, pants, sweaters, tanks, even socks. Chances are, if you open your closet during any season, your eyes will land on at least one knit piece. Having so many options available at any time can make it really easy to fall into familiar habits, but we’re here to help you try something new. Read on for some of our favorite tips for styling knitwear.
Summer is definitely not the time for thick sweaters. Still, it’s always nice to wrap yourself in something that’s equally cozy and breathable, especially once the sun goes down. And if you’re not comfortable wearing a sheer top over a bralette or bikini top, don’t worry–our bodysuits are here for you.
- Apres-swim is the perfect opportunity to try more sheer knit pieces. Not only will they add coverage over your swimsuit, but they’re breathable and breezy. Bonus: they’ll still allow peeks at the swimsuit you spent so long deciding to pack or not. Our Gaelle pant is ready for your suitcase.
- Make it glam: our Blanca sequin cardigan is airy, but its tighter knit fabrication and classy button details ensure you aren’t compromising your sparkle by covering up a little.
- Is there such a thing as a collared shirt that’s flirty? Of course! Our Carine is the answer. Consider dressing it up over a silk blouse, or down over a form-fitting dress.
NIGHTS OUT IN KNITWEAR
Wishing statement tops came in soft knits? You’re in luck–we have them.
- At first glance, our Fey top is a standalone piece, and it definitely can be. Broaden your fashion-vision by thinking of it not just as a top, but as a layering option.Try wearing this romantic knit top as a shrug-style alternative over the Lana knit dress for added whimsy.
- Not all cardigans can rival disco balls, but our Sanya can. With its duster length and sequined knit, it’s the most glamorous cardigan you’ll ever need. Try wearing this piece over your favorite white dress for a night on the town. You’ll be catching eyes, guaranteed.
The Delma dress is a curve-hugging maxi style that’s both flirty and soft–a match made in knitwear heaven. Not feeling the deep v-neck? No worries; its collared neckline is great for wearing under higher-neck button cardigans, like the Patsy. Just pop the dress’s collar out.
Because knits can be looser or tighter, they offer lots of opportunities to layer while still showing off pieces underneath. A statement blouse under a crocheted cardigan is a great way to incorporate comfort without compromising the adorable details of the base layer. On the other hand, fuller coverage or tighter knits can be just the cozy option you need to stay comfortable in a cool office or throughout a breezy day.
- For Work: Knit blazers are incredibly soft, and they stretch with you without compromising their beautiful structured shape. Try wearing a knit blazer over a knit tank or turtleneck for a sophisticated but easy-moving office look.
- For summertime, loose knits are ideal for adding coverage without worrying about overheating. Open weave knits, like our Ethan pullover, can be layered over knit tanks or camis without worry of getting too hot.
- For everyday looks, never underestimate a classic, buttoned cardigan’s ability to elevate even the most casual of ensembles. Our Patsy cardigan is cropped to hit just at your waist–try it with jeans or linen pants to add a pop of prep.
- A collared blouse under a knit sweater or cardigan is another level of added intrigue for your ensemble, especially if the blouse is printed. Worried about bunching? Make dressing easier with our April pullover, which gives the illusion of a layered look without the hassle.
Matching is a way to bring a bolder statement while keeping things perfectly cozy. A matching knit set brings texture–and added comfort–to classic matching sets.
- Tweed is timeless, but if you prefer something lighter, consider trying a matching skirt set in knit instead, like our Janu knit jacket and the matching Lumi knit short.
- Double dots: Try matching a knit patterned knit top with a patterned knit bottom for a cohesive, fun, and romantic outfit. Our Mae knit flare skirt and matching Tula bra top will have you looking like a vintage starlet on vacation.
- We’ve established that hot weather doesn’t have to stop knit sets, and neither is the beach.Throw a matching skirt and tank over your swimsuit for a cohesive and fashionable alternative to a coverup.
WHAT’S THE POINTELLE OF IT ALL?
Pointelle is a fabrication method that uses loose knitting to create clothing, sometimes with visible open spaces, making such pieces extra light and breathable. These open details can be in cute shapes or patterns, which add extra interest and texture to your outfit. Because of these openings in their knit, pointelle styles are perfect for layering.
- The Ninette top is a spicier but put-together take on classic pointelle, with ribbon details and a collared neckline that offsets the delicate knit. Since it’s unlined, the pointelle style provides a window to your layering choices underneath: a tank, a bodysuit, or even a dress. Pointelle tops like this are particularly adept at dressing up slip dresses when you need a light extra layer in a pinch.
- Our Risa cardigan is an update on a generational favorite–who doesn’t love a cozy button-up cardigan? Its cropped length is great for pairing with your favorite denim, and the pointelle details set it apart from a standard sweater. It offers more coverage than the Ninette, making it an all-season option for throwing over your favorite top.
- The Orla cardigan is the best of both worlds: looser knit pointelle, but with extra additions such as beautiful buttons and longer sleeves for added coziness. With a slightly slouchier fit through the arms, it’s an all-weather casual layering option while remaining romantic and lightweight.
Picking your accessories to pair with different forms of knitwear is another opportunity to let your personality show through. Closer knit styles, like fuller-coverage sweaters or structured cardigans, often lend themselves well to larger jewelry pieces or pearl accessories to bring an air of feminine sophistication. Meanwhile, turtlenecks offer a wonderfully blank slate to play with, so try a pendant or statement necklace with these. The turtleneck works as the perfect background for your necklace and will really make it pop. For pointelle styles, because of their more relaxed knit and textural details, delicate earrings or necklaces in shorter lengths may be best to add touches of sparkle.
